Susan gets to the hospital room to yell at EJ to get back in bed, since he’s sitting and reading on his tablet. But he will not! He wants to get out. “My son needs me. I can feel it.” EJ tells his mom a bit about how hurt Johnny’s been since he found out “certain things” about him.

Johnny won’t come to him, so EJ has to go to him to make amends. He insists he’ll be fine when he gets back home, but she’s worried that EJ’s killer is still out there.

Paulina and Susan Have Words for Johnny

Johnny wakes up on the DiMera couch, recalling Chanel kicking him out. “What have I done?” Paulina wants to know the same thing as she waltzes in. She snaps at him to stop skulking, clean himself up and make things right with his wife.

She knows he’s in pain, but he doesn’t have to pay for his dad’s sin. “I AM his sin!” Paulina tells Johnny he can move past this with the help of a strong woman. He needs to fight for his marriage and his future. EJ’s already taken enough from him.

After Paulina leaves, Susan stops by and happily greets her grandson. She tells him EJ’s eager to see him, but Johnny would rather focus on Chanel and making things right with her.

Chanel Thinks She and Johnny Are Over

Felicity and Cat are celebrating the teen’s gold medal win in gymnastics when Chanel heads over to say hi. But then Felicity tells Cat about the adoption and Chanel runs off. She returns a short time later to apologize and tell them she won’t be a mommy.

Felicity apologizes, then Paulina shows up and Cat takes that as her cue for her and her sister to head out. Paulina insists that Chanel and Johnny are just going through a temporary setback. She just came from seeing Johnny and he’s as miserable about his decision as Chanel is.

They’ve been talking about this for weeks, Chanel says, and in all that time, he never brought this up until the last possible second. Chanel was going to be a mother, then Johnny just stopped it without talking things through. “What he did was controlling and cruel and it was exactly like EJ.”

Chanel doesn’t know how she can get past this. It’s just been one thing after another. Her miscarriage, Joy, this — it’s not getting better. Paulina tells her daughter that this is the time for her and Johnny to hold tight to each other. Come together, forgive and let their love get them through it.

Chad and Cat Run Into Each Other

Leo and Chad have breakfast in the pub and go over EJ’s shooting and the list of suspects. Leo doesn’t think Ava is going to pan out, so Chad tells him to go be an investigative reporter.

Felicity and Cat run into Chad as they head out and he congratulates Felicity on her gold medal win. Felicity turns that into pushing Chad and Cat together again.

Cat shoos Felicity away and apologizes to Chad, then teases him about his date with Maggie. “What about your hot date?” Chad asks.

Kayla Asks Dr. Russell for Help

Kayla’s on the phone with Kim, saying both she and Bo will beat the odds. Dr. Jeffrey Russell knocks on the door and comes in. Kayla asked him to stop by for “a matter of life and death.” She brings up his sepsis treatment he’s working on, and says his drug could be her brother’s only hope.

Dr. Russell’s aghast, though, because they haven’t even made it past animal testing for his drug. It’s too early to apply for experimental use. So just do it on the downlow, Kayla suggests. That, Russell says, could mean no one else ever gets a chance at the drug if they run afoul of the FDA.

Kayla apologizes and says she’s just desperate to help her brother. He understands this has to be rough, so it’s OK — but he’s got more bad news. He’d like to be let out of his contract so he can take his research lab elsewhere. Kayla just stares at him.

Why does he want out? They’ve fully funded him. Dr. Russell is concerned the place could shut down — $1,000,000 isn’t going to cut it and his potential investors have a lot more money. “Ah, you want to sell out to Big Pharma…”

Kayla gets a text about a patient crisis and Russell takes that as his cue to leave. “I’ll say prayers for you and your family.”

Kayla heads out demanding to know what EJ’s emergency is — and what he’s doing out of bed! He wants to be discharged immediately and assures her he won’t hold the hospital as liable. Fine, Kayla snaps after chastising him for needing to recover, he’s free to go.

Gabi and Leo Clash

Gabi’s searching for investors to help her get Gabi Chic away from DiMera (on the internet, no less) when Ari calls. Gabi’s already got her tickets for her daughter’s high school graduation. She cuts the call short when Leo gets home, though, to demand to know what he’s doing there.

He’s there for his book on muckraking written by “the one, the only, Jack Deveraux.” He needs some help in figuring out who shot EJ. Gabi says Ava did it, but Leo flat out tells Gabi he’s sure she did.

Gabi’s disgusted — “How could anyone with half a brain” not see that Ava was the shooter? The police will track her down and arrest her. Leo reminds her that they almost literally ran into each other back when EJ was shot and she had some pretty incriminating things to say.

Gabi, in turns, tells Leo that if he publishes anything about her in The Spectator, she’ll sue him into oblivion. They insult each other some more until Gabi storms out, leaving Leo to eye up her purse she left behind.

In the Show’s Final Moments

Susan tells Johnny that she has faith it’ll all work out — with Chanel and EJ. Who is going to be home soon. “How soon?” Johnny demands. EJ limps in just then with a cane. Johnny’s about to rush off, but Susan tries stopping him to work this out.

As he brushes by his grandmother, Susan flinches, yelps and tells EJ that Johnny has a “bad, bad” secret. It’s something very dark. EJ’s about to redirect Susan to help him find the memory card from Rafe’s camera, then suddenly remembers where he put it.

Cat tells Chad she isn’t sure who won the silent auction for her. Just then, she gets a notification — EJ won the bid. Chad smiles ruefully. “That son of a bitch.”

After half a second of hesitating, Leo starts rifling through the purse, just as Gabi re-enters the room. “What the hell are you doing?!”

Chanel and Johnny spot each other in the square — he with his luggage — and Chanel just rushes into the bakery, rather than speak to him.

Susan goes upstairs and as soon as she’s gone, EJ just about doubles over in pain. He sits down at the desk, pulls the card from the drawer and slips it into his tablet. We see a recording of EJ’s shoulder and over it, Johnny, gun drawn on his father. “Oh, Giovanni, no…”
