The Untold Truth About Frank Fritz & Danielle Colby: Secrets Revealed Two Years After His Death
About Frank Fritz and Danielle Colby’s Relationship

On January 18, 2010, American Pickers premiered on the History Channel, introducing the world to the unique art of “picking” — the process of scouring barns, garages, and forgotten corners of America for hidden treasures. Fronted by Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, and supported by Danielle Colby, the show quickly became a fan favorite, offering a blend of history, commerce, and character-driven storytelling. But behind the scenes, the dynamic between the hosts, particularly involving Frank, was far more complicated than viewers knew.
Early Success and Rising Tensions
Fritz, Wolfe, and Colby started the show as close friends with a shared passion for antiques. While Mike owned Antique Archaeology, Frank ran his own business, Frank Fritz Finds. Fans often assumed the profits from their finds were split equally, but History Channel confirmed that each star sold their own items independently.
Despite a seemingly smooth partnership, cracks began to appear. Over the 12 years Fritz starred in American Pickers, tensions developed. By 2021, Frank made his final appearance on the show. Though fans were initially told he had stepped away for back surgery, it later emerged that his departure was permanent.
Entertainment Weekly reported in July 2021 that Fritz’s exit was not simply due to health issues. In statements to the press, Wolfe expressed sadness and hope for his former co-star, calling their time together a journey of “highs and lows.” However, Danielle Colby’s public comments suggested deeper emotional and professional struggles that contributed to his departure.
Health Struggles and a Battle with Addiction

Behind Frank Fritz’s TV persona lay personal battles few knew about. He had suffered from Crohn’s disease for over 36 years — a condition marked by chronic and unpredictable inflammation of the bowel. The toll on his mental health was severe, and to cope, Fritz turned to alcohol.
By mid-2021, Frank openly acknowledged his addiction and entered a 77-day rehabilitation program at the Abbey Center in Bettendorf, Iowa. His time there marked a turning point. “I don’t like drinking anymore,” he shared in an interview, citing the tragic deaths of both his mother and grandfather due to alcoholism as key motivators to stay sober.
Frank emerged from rehab with renewed clarity, dedicating himself to helping others. He attended regular counseling sessions and even began sponsoring others battling addiction. “It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me,” he said. Yet, despite this progress, it wasn’t enough to earn him a return to American Pickers.
