Colby Donaldson is one of the most recognizable players in Survivor’s 25-year history. From his first appearance in Survivor: The Australian Outback to his recent run in Survivor 50, Donaldson’s name will now be forever linked with the franchise after four appearances.

Donaldson showcased his physical skills on the Outback after winning five individual immunity necklaces, a record that remains unbroken. However, after various strategic challenges across later seasons, his journey took an unexpected turn on the Fijian beaches during Survivor 50.

Sadly for Donaldson, the New Era twists and turns cost him the ability to vote early in the competition. His journey faced a further setback when an under-edited injury almost forced him out of the game. Although he ultimately was voted out, he narrowly missed becoming a jury member.

In an interview, Donaldson opened up about the injury that almost ended his time on the show. He mentioned that the injury had two parts: first, he hyperextended his foot during the Zac Brown challenge. This stress led to a torn ligament. Following this challenge, he stepped on something sharp, causing an infection that became a serious concern, especially since he could not receive antibiotics while still competing.

By day 11, Donaldson found that the infection had developed into a pus pocket, a clear sign for medical evacuation. He bravely requested to remain for the upcoming Tribal Council, opting to get voted out rather than being pulled from the game, stating, “It was one of the worst infections since Dr. Joe joined the show.”

Ultimately, Donaldson managed to outlast his injury for a few hours, closing out this chapter of his life on his own terms. When asked about his final moments, he reflected on Jeff Probst’s words, “One last time, Donaldson,” saying it was a respectful nod to their long-standing friendship.
