At the ATX TV Festival, Boston Rob Mariano ignited fresh questions when he talked about the risks of ignoring advice and the fallout that can come from pre-game alliances.

It’s been several weeks since the Survivor 50 finale, but the conversation around the season is still heating up. One of the biggest reasons is Boston Rob Mariano, who mentored runner-up Jonathan Young and has now been offering his take on Jonathan’s game in multiple interviews.
And if you’ve been following Rob’s recent comments, one thing is clear: his remarks have not always lined up neatly with what he said before.
In a newly shared Instagram clip, Rob is seen on a panel discussing “preconceived plans” in modern seasons, particularly when returning players are involved. While he never names names, the context strongly points to the ongoing debate around pre-game alliances, a topic that has dominated Survivor chatter for weeks.
“If you have somebody that you have access to that has played these games before… why not do your homework?” Rob says in the clip, making his point with a carefully worded but unmistakably pointed message.
That line alone raises eyebrows, especially because Rob has advised more than one recent player. He’s reportedly spoken to Jonathan Young before Survivor 50, and he also gave advice to Shannon Fairweather ahead of Survivor 49. So the question becomes: was he speaking generally, or was he quietly sending a message to one specific player?
Jonathan is the obvious name fans keep circling. Rob has already suggested that Jonathan didn’t handle the jury as well as he should have, which only makes this new clip feel even more loaded. If Jonathan had asked for advice before the season, is Rob now hinting that not all of it was followed?
Rob then turns to the subject of pre-game alliances and doesn’t hold back: “I think where it gets tricky and crosses the line is if there are pre-conceived plans in place. And it’s hard to avoid that these days, especially when you have returning players.”

That wording makes his stance even harder to ignore. Rob says he has never been part of a pre-game alliance, which matters because that same type of setup helped put him and Amber Brkich Mariano on the chopping block in Survivor: Winners at War. In other words, he knows exactly how dangerous these arrangements can be.
And now, after Survivor 50, fans are still debating whether Jonathan was caught up in a pre-game “Zoom” alliance involving Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Chrissy Hofbeck, and Benjamin “Coach” Wade at the very least. Nothing has been formally confirmed, but the rumors have not gone away.
Could Jonathan have told Rob he was approached for such an alliance, only for Rob to warn him away from it? That would certainly fit the tone of the clip. It also makes Rob’s comments feel less like a passing thought and more like a very deliberate reminder of what can go wrong before the game even begins.
The truth is, the pre-game alliance story around Survivor 50 is still largely unconfirmed. No one has openly admitted to the full extent of it, even though other players have weighed in. Still, if you rewatch the season, especially the “Blood Moon” twist, it’s hard to miss the sudden shifts in strategy and loyalty.
So did Boston Rob try to warn Jonathan Young about the dangers of joining a pre-game alliance — both inside the game and after it aired? That’s certainly the impression Rob seems to leave behind.
