Emmerdale Star Jeff Hordley Opens Up on Silent Health Battle as Cain Dingle Faces Devastating Cancer Storyline

Shocking Jeff Hordley Health Revelation Leaves Emmerdale Fans Reeling as Cain Dingle’s Cancer Storyline Turns Devastating

Jeff Hordley, the much-loved Emmerdale star behind Cain Dingle, has opened up about a private health battle he has been living with for decades — even as his ITV character is dragged through one of the soap’s most heartbreaking cancer storylines yet.

For Emmerdale viewers, Cain Dingle’s prostate cancer plot has already become one of the soap’s most emotional arcs in years. After surgery, Cain is left facing grim new fears that the disease may have spread, while his recovery is marked by painful side effects, emotional strain and the growing fear of what comes next for him and Moira Dingle, played by Natalie J Robb.

The 56-year-old was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in his mid-twenties, after symptoms had been troubling him for years. The chronic illness affects the digestive system and has no cure, making everyday life unpredictable and, at times, exhausting.

At first, doctors believed he was dealing with irritable bowel syndrome. But after further testing, Hordley finally got the answer he had been searching for — and it was far more serious than he had been told.

Jeff Hordley addresses Emmerdale axe fearsSpeaking in previous interviews, Hordley said the warning signs simply would not go away. Fatigue, weight loss and persistent digestive problems pushed him to keep pressing for answers when the situation did not improve.

“I was still sick and tired, and I kept losing weight,” he explained, describing how the symptoms continued even after he tried to manage them through diet changes.

Over the years, the soap favourite has become an ambassador for Crohn’s & Colitis UK, using his platform to speak honestly about life with a condition that can flare up without warning and affect every part of daily routine.

More recently, Hordley revealed a surprising turn in how he handles his illness. On a podcast, he admitted he has moved away from medication and instead manages his symptoms through lifestyle changes, including diet, seasonal eating and exercise — though he was careful to stress that this approach will not work for everyone.

“I’ve managed to keep it under wraps because of diet,” he said, showing how closely he now monitors his condition.

What makes the story even more powerful is that Cain’s own cancer storyline has had a real-life impact on Hordley too. The actor said the plot prompted him to get a PSA test, becoming more alert to the risks men face as they get older.

Since joining Emmerdale in 2000, Hordley has seen first-hand how a soap storyline can spark conversations far beyond the screen. He also said the plot encouraged other men around his age — including colleagues — to think seriously about getting checked.

“It makes you think about the ‘what ifs’… and the importance of getting checked,” he said.

Despite the emotional weight of the role and the challenges of living with Crohn’s disease, Hordley’s personal life has remained firmly rooted in family. He has been married to fellow Emmerdale star Zoe Henry, who plays Rhona Goskirk, since 2003.

The pair first met at drama school in the 1990s and share two children, Violet and Stan. Like many couples working in long-running TV, they have had to balance busy filming schedules with family life — something they have spoken about over the years.

From a hidden health battle to one of Emmerdale’s most devastating storylines, Jeff Hordley continues to deliver an unforgettable performance while navigating a deeply personal journey of his own.
