LEAKED! Survivor’s Joe Hunter Lands Tyler Perry Netflix Role
Joe Hunter went from back-to-back Survivor finalist to Netflix star — and the wildest part of the story is how it all happened. While on the phone with Tyler Perry talking about a gut-wrenching firehouse tragedy, Joe’s young daughter walked in asking for the Tooth Fairy. That single moment changed everything.

Joe Hunter’s Survivor journey may not have ended with a million dollars — but it opened a door that most players could only dream about. The two-time finalist has landed a starring role on Tyler Perry’s brand new Netflix firefighter drama, and the story of how he got the job is almost as wild as anything that happened out on the island.
A Record-Breaking Run on Survivor
First, let’s talk about what Joe actually accomplished on Survivor. He played twice within a single year, and he made it to the final Tribal Council both times. That puts him in one of the most exclusive clubs in the history of the show — alongside legends like Sandra Diaz-Twine, Amanda Kimmel, Russell Hantz, Michele Fitzgerald, and Natalie Anderson.

That said, the jury votes didn’t go his way either time. On Survivor 48, he received just one vote to win — from Cedrek McFadden. On Survivor 50, the jury shut him out completely. By traditional measures, Joe left the game empty-handed. But what came next proved that sometimes the real prize isn’t the one at the final Tribal Council.
Tyler Perry Came Calling After Survivor 48
What most fans didn’t know is that Tyler Perry — one of the biggest names in Hollywood and a massive Survivor superfan — had his eye on Joe. Perry even inspired what became known as the “Tyler Perry idol” back on Survivor: Cagayan, so his love for the show runs deep.
The connection between Perry and Joe really ignited during Survivor 48, when Joe’s emotional friendship with castmate Eva Erickson captured viewers’ hearts. After the season aired, Perry reached out directly.
“After season 48 with Eva, he reached out,” Joe revealed. “We talked about that a lot and then we just became good friends. He’s just an outstanding human being and wonderful man.”
The Tooth Fairy Moment That Sealed the Deal
So Perry was a fan, and they were building a friendship — but what actually convinced Perry to cast a reality TV contestant with zero acting experience in his new Netflix drama? The answer is one of the most unexpectedly wholesome stories in recent memory.
Joe was on the phone with Perry one day, deep in a heavy conversation about a devastating firehouse call that had involved children. It was raw and real — exactly the kind of story that reminds you why firefighters are the people they are.
Then, right in the middle of that phone call, Joe’s young daughter came running up to him. She had just lost a tooth, and she needed to know about the Tooth Fairy.
“Right after that, my daughter comes up to me and is like, ‘Hey, daddy, I lost my tooth and I need the Tooth Fairy,'” Joe recalled with a laugh. He didn’t think much of it in the moment — but Tyler Perry was watching everything unfold in real time.
“He just saw that dynamic, and then we were off and running with this show, and that’s all,” Joe said.
Chief Bailey on Netflix’s Where There’s Smoke
Joe will be playing Chief Bailey on Tyler Perry’s Where There’s Smoke, a brand new Netflix firefighter drama that follows a team of firefighters navigating the intense challenges of their profession alongside personal struggles, fractured relationships, and the emotional weight of saving lives every single day. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
For Joe, stepping from the beaches of Fiji onto a Hollywood set in Atlanta was a surreal transition — but he says the experience of watching Perry work up close has been nothing short of inspiring.
“He’s such a brilliant person,” Joe said. “He did it all, he put it all together. But the stories are real, and he saw something in me, and we’ve become really great friends. It’s gonna knock your socks off.”
Coming from a two-time Survivor finalist who survived back-to-back seasons and walked away with a Netflix deal, we believe him.
