Like it or not, Rafe may be back, but he’s most definitely down for the count on Days of Our Lives. Rolf’s serum worked a little too well and he’s not just forgotten the last few months, but everything about himself, his life and Salem.

He’ll get his memory back eventually (we’re pretty sure), but for now, he’s out. Thanks to Gabi’s DNA test and the timing of EJ’s switcheroo, everyone’s going to believe the real Rafe is a fake. That may not be enough to keep him locked up, but it will be enough to keep his family, friends and loved ones from him.

And that’s going to mean the Hernandez family is going to be missing its most stalwart, dependable family member. That’s going to be a blow, especially with Gabi and Javi worrying about where the real Rafe is. But at the same time, that could be an unintentional win if word gets out to the rest of the Hernandez family! Maybe, just maybe it would be enough to bring Dario (last played by Jordi Vilasuso and originated by the late Francisco San Martin) home once again.

Dario was last seen nearly eight years ago, fleeing from the cops for stealing money from Countess Wilhemina and DiMera — among other businesses. And while it was definitely illegal, it was also white collar crime, and it’s doubtful he’d spend decades in prison for it. If the show really wanted to bring Dario back, they could say that in the years he was gone, he did his time and reformed, allowing him to return without having to worry about any messy arrest.

With everyone convinced Rafe is missing (even though he’ll be right under their noses), Dario could come back to support Gabi and reconnect with Javi. He’s long been the loose end in the family, all-but dropping off the face of the earth, while Rafe and Gabi have remained close through all her shenanigans.

This could be the chance to bring him back, redeem him, and re-integrate him into Salem. Heck, with his history with Abigail, we could even see him eventually being part of a story that brings her back! Maybe she’d return with her own memory problems (for real, though, unlike Cat’s faking) and not remember anything past her marriage to Dario. That would throw a wrench into her reunion with Chad and add plenty of soapy drama.

More than anything, though, it would give Days of Our Lives a reason to keep building the Hernandez family back out. And that’s something that Cherie Jimenez shared with Soaps.com that she’d love to see from practically the first day she stepped into Gabi’s shoes.
