We certainly saw this one coming, even if Days of Our Lives’ Doug and Holly didn’t. Tate just ratted his girlfriend’s buddy out to Julie, telling her about the theft of Alice’s necklace. And he did it just before Doug could come clean himself!
Tate and Holly are toast, of course. Not only did he rat Doug out in a fit of jealousy, he kept his mouth shut about it when Holly said Doug was going to fess up. Combined with his Sophia and baby drama, there’s no way Holly is letting this go.
And that’s especially true, as she was so happy that Doug decided to do the right thing and fess up himself. The timing couldn’t have been worse, as Julie, of course, didn’t believe that her husband’s grandson was going to tell her himself. She lost it, and tossed Doug III out of the house and out of her life.
And we get it. Julie’s been dealing with a lot of grief, and Doug has become a lifeline, of sorts, allowing her to still feel connected to her husband. To learn that he’s been lying to her from the moment he arrived and stole her grandmother’s necklace,
Doug’s clearly made some bad choices in life — you don’t go straight from jail to stealing a family heirloom to pay off your illicit debts by doing what’s right. But as he told Julie, the time he’s spent with her has been eye-opening and heart warming. It’s meant the world to get to know Julie and, through her, his grandfather Doug.
This was Doug III’s chance to turn his life around, become a better person. And it was working. Now he’s thrown out, no job and no home. Sure, Holly will be there for him, but we don’t see Maggie opening her home to the young man after Julie tells her what happened.
And that could be disastrous. Left with no alternatives, Doug could fall back into his old habits. He could return to doing what he has to to survive, and rather than following in his grandfather’s footsteps as a redeemed rogue, he could descend into villainy — especially if he feels like he needs to get revenge on Tate for his betrayal!
So far, Doug’s seemed to be on the path of redemption. But this could be the show’s chance to shock us. We know how quick our beloved Salemites can be to turn to vengeance — and how often that blows up in their faces! And that could make things even worse for Doug.
Still, it’s not too late to turn this around. Julie could be the one to break Doug’s redemption, but she could also be the one to complete it. She was clearly heartbroken and conflicted about throwing him out. If she relents, listens to him and forgives him, this could be what he needs to become the next Salem hero.
