GH’s Most Authentic Pairing: Gio & Emma Shine On and Off Screen
What makes Gio and Emma’s slow-burn friendship so believable? Giovanni Mazza reveals the answer.

No duo on General Hospital feels more real than Gio and Emma. Their bond has unfolded slowly but naturally on screen, blending teasing banter with emotional depth. They’ve got each other’s backs, especially through some dramatic times. Whether Emma is helping Gio navigate the painful truth about his parentage or Gio is ready to sneak into Professor Dalton’s lab, the two have a friendship with undeniable sparks that could easily blossom into something more.
Fearless Honesty Defines Gio and Emma’s Friendship
Gio’s portrayer, Giovanni Mazza, spoke with Soap Opera Digest and opened up about Gio’s connection with Emma (Braedyn Bruner). “Opposites attract, right?” he remarked, noting that the big thing connecting the two is the fact that they don’t fear one another. He recalled early in their friendship when Gio would tell her not to do things like steal wallets or phones. Gio wasn’t afraid to give his honest opinion.
When Gio was devastated after learning Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) were his biological parents, Emma supported him without fear, he explained. Mazza further noted that they have a comfort level that allows them to say what they want, and “Even if one of them goes too far, they can talk it out and continue to have a great relationship.”
Besties Behind the Scenes
“It just feels real,” Mazza stated of his and Bruner’s real-life friendship. He remarked that not only has she attended the show’s gatherings with him, but she’s also helped celebrate his birthday. Their bond cannot be denied, he explained, stating that, “On the show, she’s sort of like my rock.”
Being off-camera besties helps them during scenes, he further explained, noting that their bond is “an authentic connection. It’s real, and it’s us responding to each other in such a beautiful way.” He feels lucky for their on and off-screen friendship, and when they’re on set, “it just feels like a continuation of life.” He truly enjoys having their bond mirrored in their scenes. (Will Gio and Emma become the next supercouple?)
