According to the Tampa Bay Times, Rex sustained fatal injuries in a dirt biking accident in Georgia on Saturday, March 14.
Rex had been the quarterback at Syracuse University, serving as a backup between 2017 and 2020 and appearing in 30 games total â 16 of them as the primary quarterback. He also overcame testicular cancer in 2018; he was diagnosed that March, underwent treatment, and was declared cancerâfree by June of the same year.
Rex had been engaged to Savanna Morgan after six years together; the couple announced their engagement less than a month before his death. In an Instagram tribute, Morgan wrote about their life together and the depth of their bond: âNo one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only 6 short yearsâŚâ She added that the pair âlived every single day like it was our last.â
Syracuse Football also posted a statement mourning Rexâs passing: âOur Orange family mourns the loss of Rex Culpepper, who passed away this weekend at the age of 28. Rex lived his life with endless passion, having overcome cancer at the age of 20 while playing for the Orange.â
Rex was one of three sons; his brothers, Honor and Judge Culpepper, posted a joint tribute on Instagram asking friends and acquaintances to leave memories of Rex so they could âread and laugh and cry.â
