For over 20 years, Survivor hasn’t just tested endurance — it has built a global community. Since launching in 2000, the CBS reality juggernaut has featured 751 players across 49 seasons, creating unforgettable moments, rivalries, and friendships.

But behind the iconic torches and final tribal councils lies a painful reality: 17 Survivor contestants have passed away since competing on the show. Their deaths left lasting impacts on fans, fellow players, and the Survivor family itself.

Here’s a look back at the contestants whose journeys ended far too soon — and the legacy they left behind.

1. Jane Bright (Survivor: Nicaragua)

Jane Bright, a sixth-place finisher and Spirit Award Fan Favorite, died at 71 in her North Carolina home. Her daughter confirmed the news in May 2025.

Host Jeff Probst praised her fearless attitude, saying she proved age was never a limit when it came to adventure.


2. Kim Johnson (Survivor: Africa)

Runner-up Kim Johnson passed away at 79 in 2024. Her family said she remained optimistic until her final days.

Winner Ethan Zohn called it an honor to face her at the final tribal council, while Probst labeled her a Survivor pioneer.


3. Sonja Christopher (Survivor: Borneo)

The first contestant ever voted out of Survivor history died at 87 in 2024.

Probst remembered her as one of the kindest people to ever play the game.


4. Keith Nale (San Juan del Sur, Cambodia)

A fan favorite across two seasons, Keith Nale died at 62 in 2023 after battling cancer.

CBS described him as “completely one of a kind,” beloved by fans and crew alike.


5. Roger Sexton (Survivor: The Amazon)

Roger Sexton passed away at 76 in 2022 following complications from Lewy Body Dementia.

His family remembered him as disciplined, confident, and driven.


6. Dan Lembo (Survivor: Nicaragua)

Dan Lembo, known for his bold personality, died at 75 in 2022 at his Manhattan home.

7. Clay Jordan (Survivor: Thailand)

Just one vote away from winning, Clay Jordan died at 66 in 2022 after a short illness.

He was remembered for his humor, generosity, and love for life.


8. Ralph Kiser (Survivor: Redemption Island)

Ralph Kiser died at 56 after suffering a heart attack in 2022.

Probst highlighted his infectious smile and unforgettable personality.

Sunday Burquest died at 50 in 2021 after battling cancer.

Probst said her kindness and warmth lit up every room she entered.


10. Angie Jakusz (Survivor: Palau)

Angie Jakusz passed away at 40 in 2021 following a long cancer battle.

Castmates said she valued the experience over fame.


11. Cliff Robinson (Survivor: Cagayan)

 Former NBA All-Star Cliff Robinson from Newmark, N.J. will be among the castaways competing on SURVIVOR: CAGAYAN

Former NBA All-Star Cliff Robinson died at 53 in 2020 from lymphoma.

Probst praised his class, humility, and respect for everyone around him.


12. Rudy Boesch (Survivor: Borneo, All-Stars)

One of the most iconic players ever, Rudy Boesch died at 91 in 2019 after battling Alzheimer’s.

He remains one of the most respected figures in Survivor history.


13. Ashley Massaro (Survivor: China)

WWE star Ashley Massaro died at 39 in 2019.

Fellow contestants recalled her resilience and fighting spirit.


14. Dan Kay (Survivor: Gabon)

Dan Kay

Dan Kay died unexpectedly at 40 in 2016.

He was remembered for his intelligence, work ethic, and passion for adventure.


15. Caleb Bankston (Survivor: Blood vs. Water)

Caleb Bankston will be one of 20 castaways competing with their loved one and other returning players on SURVIVOR: BLOOD VS. WATER

Caleb Bankston tragically died at 26 in a railway accident in 2014. Probst called him one of the most humble and likable contestants ever.


16. B.B. Andersen (Survivor: Borneo)

The second person voted out in Survivor history died at 77 in 2013 after battling brain cancer. Probst said his love for adventure defined his life.


17. Jennifer Lyon (Survivor: Palau)

Jennifer Lyon, 32, from Encino, California, is one of the 20 new castaways set to participate in SURVIVOR: PALAU

Jennifer Lyon passed away at 37 in 2010 following a battle with breast cancer. Her courage continues to inspire fans worldwide.
