Shocking Emmerdale secret: Bear Wolf star Joshua Richards’ married life and stunning health transformation revealed
Emmerdale’s Bear Wolf may be fighting for his life on screen, but the real story behind actor Joshua Richards is just as eye-catching, with Hollywood moments, a long marriage, and a remarkable health turnaround.
Best known to fans as Paddy’s no-nonsense dad, Bear first arrived in the Dales in 2019 as a former wrestler. Now, the character is caught in a tense storyline, with prison looming after being accused of murdering Ray Walters following a disturbing period in which he was groomed and controlled.

Who plays Bear Wolf in Emmerdale?
Joshua Richards is the actor behind Bear Wolf. While this is his first soap role, he is certainly no newcomer to the screen.
Over the years, he has appeared in well-known TV favourites including Downton Abbey, Heartbeat and Panic Button, as well as building an impressive stage career with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Off camera, Joshua has been married to his wife Sarah Parks for more than 30 years.

It seems acting talent runs in the family, as Sarah has also appeared in both Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
Speaking to the Mirror, Joshua said: “She has played a judge in Emmerdale before.”
He also admitted he once expected Sarah to secure a long-running soap role before he did. “In the end, I ended up being on Emmerdale and she is the one who supports me,” he said.
Viewers may remember Sarah most clearly as the judge in Jack Sugden’s trial after he was accused of starting the fire that led to the death of his wife, Sarah Sugden.
She has also appeared in Coronation Street as DC Pullen during the investigation into Sarah Platt’s false imprisonment, as well as in another role connected to Liz McDonald.
Beyond supporting him at home, Joshua has said Sarah played a key part in helping him completely change his lifestyle in recent years.

Dramatic weight loss for Emmerdale star Joshua Richards
Over the past few years, Joshua has undergone a striking transformation. He has lost four stone and reversed his Type 2 diabetes.
He went from 17 and a half stone to 13 and a half stone, crediting the change to diet and lifestyle adjustments.
“My health wasn’t too good. And I was tucking into all the wrong meals from Emmerdale catering like lasagne and chips!” he admitted.
After reading Eat More Live Well by Dr Meghan Rossi, he said the approach helped him turn his health around. Even though a bad back means exercise is not part of his routine, Joshua says the results speak for themselves.
His co-stars quickly noticed the difference when he returned to set after time away. “Oh you’ve lost weight, how have you done that?” they asked.
Joshua joked: “Well, I’ve kept away from you. That must help!”
Huge Hollywood role
Long before arriving in the Dales, Joshua had already experienced a taste of Hollywood.
Back in 2004, he appeared in Troy alongside Brad Pitt. He also shared scenes with Sean Bean, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom and Peter O’Toole.
Recalling the experience to The Mirror, he described Brad as “chilled, laidback and charming” away from the cameras. He also revealed that the cast enjoyed some memorable parties while filming.

Emotional connection to Emmerdale
Despite a varied career, Emmerdale holds a deeply personal meaning for Joshua.
Just a year before landing the role of Bear, he sadly lost his mum Jean at the age of 80. She had been a devoted fan of the soap.
He told The Mirror: “My mum Jean was an ardent fan. We watched it when it was Emmerdale Farm and she would have been over the moon that I was doing it. But we lost her last year.”
He added that she never knew he had landed the part, making the moment all the more bittersweet.
And while Bear’s future in the village remains uncertain, Joshua’s journey on and off screen has already been a fascinating one.
