Shocking Emmerdale twist: Dr Todd uncovers Charity’s secret after a devastating baby drama

The last person you’d ever want learning your deepest, darkest secrets is Emmerdale’s Dr Todd (Caroline Harker) — and now Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is about to discover that the hard way in an unexpected ITV soap twist.

Todd has completely broken down Jacob Sugden’s (Joe-Warren Plant) confidence as part of her cruel campaign of abuse, targeting the young medical student at every chance she gets.

Jacob has been left so shaken by his so-called mentor’s vicious behaviour that he can barely think straight or focus on the job in front of him, constantly worrying about how Todd will react if he makes the “wrong” move.

Fed up with living under that pressure, he made an official complaint to HR earlier this week, much to Todd’s horror. She warned him to be careful, but Jacob stood firm and refused to let her intimidate him any further.

Todd, however, later stepped in when Charity was found in a lift after giving birth to the baby Jacob and her granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) believe is theirs.

Charity was rushed to theatre, with Todd carrying out the surgery. In the first of two video clips — which you can watch below — from Wednesday’s (April 22) episode of the ITV soap, Sarah and Jacob meet the baby as they try to process the traumatic arrival and worry about Charity.

Jacob reassures Sarah that Todd is highly skilled, meaning Charity should be in safe hands.

The procedure seems to go well, with Charity later seen recovering in a hospital room in the second clip (at the top of the article). There, she makes a panicked phone call to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter), terrified that Ross Barton (Michael Parr) — who helped deliver the baby — is becoming attached.

As viewers know, Ross is actually the newborn’s biological father. Despite Sarah and Jacob’s belief that the embryo transfer worked, it didn’t — and Charity later fell pregnant with Ross’s baby after a one-night stand with her ex.

Desperate to give Sarah the baby she’s always wanted, Charity decides to keep the paternity secret. But fearing Ross could ruin everything, she convinces Chas to step in and have a word with him.

Chas does exactly that outside Hotten General, warning Ross to stay away from the baby. What they don’t realise, though, is that Dr Todd has overheard the entire conversation.

Oh, dear.

How much has she heard? Does she now know the baby isn’t Jacob’s? And if she does, how will she use that information to her advantage?

Todd is ruthless, and she has shown before — especially in connection with Maya Stepney — that she’ll do whatever it takes, using any information she can to stay in control.

Will she confront Charity about what she’s learned? Or will she go straight to Jacob and shatter his world by revealing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
