Emmerdale’s Louise Jameson has confirmed her character will be involved in the aftermath of Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) being sexually assaulted by Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker).

A few days ago, the ITV soap aired some extremely harrowing scenes that saw Doctor Todd take advantage of a drunk Charity.

The wicked surgeon had been piling the pressure onto Charity about the blackmail money she was waiting for. At first, the price to buy Doctor Todd’s silence about baby Leyla not being Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) child was £10,000, but it was then increased to £100,000.

Charity robbed the depot last week and secured £30k. She gave it to Caitlin, and was put on edge when she stated that the secret about Leyla would be revealed within 24 hours if Charity didn’t find the rest of the money.

The beloved character knew she could get £70k in a matter of hours, so she turned to drink to try and ignore her problems. The booze made Charity bold, and so she told Doctor Todd to go right ahead and tell Sarah the truth.

This move made Caitlin feel as though she wasn’t in control of the situation. She proceeded to wait for Charity to pass out as a result of her alcohol, and then sexually assaulted her.

In Monday’s episode of the show, Charity went to the police station and reported her attack. She went through a physical examination, and was then questioned by DS Reid (Angela Lonsdale), who told her that they would arrest Doctor Todd the next day.

In today’s instalment – now available on ITVX and YouTube – Doctor Todd tells Reid that Charity’s allegation about her is false. She states that they did have sex, but everything that happened was consensual.

Caitlin is released, with Charity later discovering that police do not have enough evidence to support her statement.

As the aftermath continues, Emmerdale will focus on Charity’s internal battle as she wonders whether to tell a loved one about her assault, or keep it to herself.

Among the people who have no idea about Doctor Todd’s true nature is Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick). She has been involved in a romance story with Caitlin, and has so far fallen for her comments about Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) being obsessed with her, and Charity being a jealous ex.

With actress Caroline Harker leaving her role as Doctor Todd, it’s safe to assume there will come a time where Vanessa discovers the truth about the woman she welcomed into her home, and she will need all the support she can get.

One person confirmed to be there for Vanessa during this period is Mary Goskirk. Actress Louise Jameson, who has played Mary since 2022, has said that Mary’s ‘shoulders are going to have to grow, as Vanessa might need them to cry on in the aftermath of what’s in store for her and Doctor Todd.’

The star also added to her chat with Inside Soap that the plot is ‘going to get really dark. It’s a very bold story and Caroline Harker is marvellous.’

Actress Emma Atkins previously said of this story: ‘This has been one of the most demanding and significant storylines I’ve had to navigate as Charity. We know her as a tough, resilient character, but this trauma will expose a deep, raw vulnerability that has been heartbreaking at times to play.

‘I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out or helps others understand the quiet devastation of trauma.’
