Emmerdale has aired an emotional scene for Jacob Sugden, as he’s finally come clean about Dr Caitlin Todd’s harassment with his wife Sarah.
In tonight’s episode, Dr Todd bumped into Jacob on a walk with little Layla in the village and didn’t miss the opportunity to taunt him once again by asking if he was enjoying his “holiday”.
When Jacob pointed out he was on paternity leave, Dr Todd suggested that his colleague Richard was “shining” in his absence.
Later on at the Woolpack, Dr Todd targeted Sarah, insinuating that Jacob couldn’t wait to get back to work. “You are a very understanding wife. Good for you. I’m not so sure I would be,” Dr Todd said.
Sarah confronted Jacob right away, clearly furious about having to find out that he looked forward to going back to the hospital from someone else. When a confused Jacob asked who she spoke to, he put two and two together and ran to the pub to talk with Dr Todd. He cornered his boss as she was going to the toilet.
“Do what you want to me, but don’t you dare bring my family into it!” he said.
When Dr Todd suggested they paused their chat as she was headed to the loo, Jacob followed her in. “I’m not letting this go,” he told her, branding her “a bully”.
Dr Todd riled him up, hinting at him hating women and particularly having one as his boss. A frustrated Jacob yelled: “I don’t hate women, I just hate you!” right when Vanessa Woodfield entered the bathroom.
A smug Dr Todd smiled, revealing that having Jacob caught screaming at her had been her plan all along. Vanessa ordered Jacob to leave immediately and checked in on Dr Todd, who insisted Jacob was just “all over the place” as a new dad.
“They’re a young family. It’s not easy,” Dr Todd said as Vanessa glanced at her in admiration, saying Jacob was “lucky” to have her as his boss.
At the store, Vanessa told off Jacob over the bathroom incident, saying his late mum Leyla would be ashamed of him. The medical student tried to explain that Dr Todd had lied to Sarah — but Vanessa made it clear she didn’t believe him.
As Sarah arrived with baby Leyla, she saw how upset Jacob was and demanded an explanation. Jacob hesitated but eventually broke down in tears and admitted Dr Todd had been “bullying” him.
The couple had an honest conversation about Dr Todd, with a heartbroken Sarah listening as her husband detailed the psychological abuse his boss had subjected him to.
“I wanna be a doctor so much, but she makes me dread going to the hospital,” he said. “I don’t sleep. And then I feel knackered and I go in, and I just feel sick,” he continued, sobbing. “Like I’m waiting for her to come for me again.”
“I don’t know who I am anymore,” Jacob finally said in despair but Sarah reassured him.
“You are my husband, you are the father to our baby, and now I know what you’re going through, we can deal with this, together,” she said. “I love you and we’re gonna get through this, okay? I’m gonna help you.”
