Kai Assi’s real age has once again become a hot topic after Emmerdale fans were left completely baffled by Archie Breckle’s latest on-screen appearance. Every time the young actor appears as Jai Sharma’s son, viewers seem to ask the same question: just how old is Archie meant to be?
The conversation first kicked off in November 2025, resurfaced in March, and now, in May 2026, fans are still doing a double take. The reason? Archie looks dramatically older to some viewers, sparking fresh disbelief online all over again.
Who is Archie in Emmerdale?
Archie is the son of Jai Sharma and the late Rachel Breckle. For much of his early life, he lived away from the village with his mother, away from the drama that would later pull him back into Emmerdale.
Rachel eventually returned to the village with Archie in 2015, triggering a bitter custody battle between the pair’s parents. In the end, Rachel and Archie left again, putting the family conflict on pause — at least for a while.
Everything changed in 2019 when Rachel died off-screen, which brought Archie back to the village and back into Jai’s life in a major way.
Later that year, Archie became involved in a bullying storyline with Arthur Thomas. Since then, he’s only appeared sporadically, though more recently he has been seen a little more as he starts to build a stronger relationship with his dad.
In Thursday’s episode, Archie arrived at Jai’s office hoping for help with his maths homework. But Jai wasn’t there — Kerry was.
Not realising who had walked in, Kerry began chatting about a rather risqué picture she had sent to Jai the night before. The awkwardness hit almost immediately when she noticed Archie standing there, leaving her visibly embarrassed.
Trying to salvage the moment, Kerry offered to help with the homework instead. She admitted maths wasn’t exactly her strong point, but she still did her best to assist.
When Jai returned, he was grateful for the help and shared a tender moment with Kerry, fuelling fresh speculation that their connection could be turning into something more than a passing fling.
How old is Kai Assi in Emmerdale?
Archie’s appearance quickly set social media alight.
“How has Archie gone from 5 to 16?? He’s got a moustache and grown about 5ft!” one viewer joked online.
Another wrote: “In weeks he’s aged 10 years.”
A third fan asked: “Is it still the same actor playing Archie?” while another commented: “Little Archie suddenly looking 21.”
So, how old is Archie supposed to be?
The character of Archie Breckle was born on December 13 2012, which means he is currently 13 and will turn 14 later this year.
Kai Assi was also born in 2012, so the actor is around 13 or 14 years old too.
Has Archie been recast in Emmerdale?
This same question came up last year when Archie returned after a long absence from the screen.
At the time, Jai and Kerry were bonding over their children after being locked in an office together. Kerry opened up about losing Amy, while Jai admitted he hadn’t been spending enough time with Archie.
Archie then appeared for the first time in more than a year, having last been seen in the middle of 2024. Frustrated that his dad was once again putting work first, he told Jai exactly how he felt. Kerry later urged Jai to pull a sickie so he could spend time with his son.
Once the episode aired, some viewers wondered whether the role had been recast.
“When I saw this Emmerdale pic I had to double check if Archie had been recast. But nope, that is still Kai Assi,” one fan posted online.
Kai has played Archie since 2019, when the character returned to the village. Before that, the role was portrayed by twins Adam and Liyana Shahzad.
