Shocking Survivor numbers are stacking up fast after the Survivor 50 finale — and some of the long-running records are even more surprising than the twists themselves.

To celebrate the 26-year anniversary of Survivor, we’re taking a fresh look at the last 50 seasons and answering the biggest questions fans keep asking about the show’s history and statistics. Since its debut on May 31, 2000, the series has grown into a true pop culture force and one of the longest-running reality competition shows on television.
And if you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Has this happened before?” or “Was it always like this?” — keep reading. The answers get more revealing the deeper you go.
How many episodes of Survivor have there been?
By the time the Survivor 50 finale wrapped, the franchise had reached 727 episodes. Since most seasons run between 13 and 16 episodes, the show now has more episodes than it has had unique castaways — even with bigger casts becoming the norm.
How many total castaways have competed across all seasons?
As of Survivor 50, 751 unique castaways have played the game. Of those, 15.9% were returning players. That includes 89 players who came back for a second season, 20 who returned for a third, 8 for a fourth, and three names who reached five seasons: Boston Rob Mariano, Cirie Fields, and Ozzy Lusth.
How many different countries has Survivor filmed in?
Survivor has filmed in 18 countries across five geographical regions over its 25-year run:
- Malaysia: season 1
- Australia: season 2
- Kenya: season 3
- French Polynesia: season 4
- Thailand: season 5
- Brazil: seasons 6 & 18
- Panama: seasons 7, 8, & 12
- Vanuatu: season 9
- Palau: seasons 10 & 16
- Guatemala: season 11
- Cook Islands: season 13
- Fiji: seasons 14 & 33-50
- China: season 15
- Gabon: season 17
- Samoa: seasons 19, 20, 23, & 24
- Nicaragua: 21, 22, 29, & 30
- Philippines: seasons 25-28
- Cambodia: seasons 31 & 32
How many hosts has Survivor had since 2000?
Only one host has ever held the job across all 50 seasons: Jeff Probst. There was a point when Jeff nearly quit, but instead of walking away, he was given more responsibility in production and eventually became showrunner. In other words, he’s not just the face of the show — he’s also the boss in Fiji while each season is being made.
How many seasons have featured returning players?
Technically, 15 seasons have included returning players. Personally, that number is 14 if you don’t count Bruce Perreault as a true returnee, since he was medically evacuated during the marooning challenge in Survivor 44 and never actually got to play. Every other returning-player season has ranged from just two returnees to a full cast of them.
Who holds the record for most immunity challenge wins in a single season?
Colby Donaldson set the original benchmark in Survivor: The Australian Outback with five immunity challenge wins. That topped the previous record of four, which Kelly Wiglesworth set in Survivor: Borneo. Since then, the record books have effectively split into two categories: men and women. A woman needs four wins to make history, while a man needs five.
That leaves an all-time list of 12 players who either set or tied the mark:
- Colby Donaldson (Survivor: The Australian Outback) – 5
- Tom Westman (Survivor: Palau) – 5
- Terry Deitz (Survivor: Panama) – 5
- Ozzy Lusth (Survivor: Cook Islands) – 5
- Mike Holloway (Survivor: Worlds Apart) – 5
- Brad Culpepper (Survivor: Game Changers) – 5
- Kelly Wiglesworth (Survivor: Borneo) – 4
- Jenna Morasca (Survivor: The Amazon) – 4
- Kim Spradlin (Survivor: One World) – 4
- Chrissy Hofbeck (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers) – 4
- Rachel LaMont (Survivor 47) – 4
- Savannah Louie (Survivor 49) – 4
Half of those record holders went on to win the exact season where they tied the record, and 91% — all but one — reached Final Tribal Council.
How many times has the Survivor Auction taken place?
There have been 18 Survivor Auctions across 50 seasons, but only three happened in the new era. Before it returned in Survivor 45, the last old-school auction was in season 30, Survivor: Worlds Apart. Jeff Probst has said the format disappeared because players stopped bidding and began hoarding cash, hoping for a late-game advantage.
The new version changed that by making spending money a necessity. Whoever finishes with the most cash loses their vote at the next Tribal Council. That rule appeared in Survivor 45 and Survivor 47, while Survivor 50 brought in a MrBeast-sized twist instead.
How many winners received every vote at Final Tribal Council?
Only five winners in Survivor history have swept every juror vote:
- Earl Cole: 9-0-0 (Survivor: Fiji)
- J.T. Thomas: 7-0 (Survivor: Tocantins)
- John Cochran: 8-0-0 (Survivor: Caramoan)
- Jeremy Collins: 10-0-0 (Survivor: Cambodia)
- Adam Klein: 10-0-0 (Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X)
Even more impressive, J.T. and Cochran are the only winners who earned every jury vote after receiving zero votes against them all game. Fans widely call both of those runs “perfect games.”
How many immunity idols have been found since they debuted?
As of the end of Survivor 50, exactly 179 hidden immunity idols have been found. Twenty-seven percent of those were discovered in the new era, but the biggest idol-heavy seasons actually came earlier. Both Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers and Survivor: Island of the Idols featured nine found idols apiece.
Survivor: Cambodia holds the record for the most successful idols played, with four. Kelley Wentworth was responsible for two of them, becoming the first player to successfully play two idols in one season. She also owns the record for the most votes negated by an idol, with nine.
How many different tribe Buff colors have been used?
Across the last 50 seasons, the show has used nine main Buff colors to represent 179 tribes, including starting tribes and merged tribes. The exact shades vary each season, but the core palette has included orange, yellow/gold, green, blue/teal, red, magenta, purple, black, and brown.
Blue is the most frequently used color, representing 18% of tribes. But yellow has a stronger winner connection, with 20% of winners starting on a yellow tribe.
What is the highest number of times a player has been voted out?
In a single season, the most times someone has been voted out is three — and that belonged to Ozzy Lusth in Survivor: South Pacific. Thanks to Redemption Island, Ozzy was voted out early, then returned by winning duels, then got voted out again, then fought back once more. He reached the Final Five, won immunity, and still ended up with his torch snuffed for a third time that season.
Because of that pattern — and the fact he has only made it to the end once — Ozzy also holds the career record for most times voted out in Survivor history with six eliminations across five seasons.
How many immunity challenges have ended in a tie?
In the U.S. version of the show, only one immunity challenge has ever ended in a draw. During the “Last Gasp” challenge in Survivor 43, players held themselves beneath a steel grate in the Fijian ocean as the tide rose and breathing became harder and harder. As contestants dropped out, it looked like another standard finish — until both Owen Knight and Karla Cruz Godoy lasted through the chaos.
When the tide began to recede and the challenge was effectively nullified, Jeff Probst declared both castaways winners. It remains one of the most unusual outcomes in the show’s history.
How many players have used the shot in the dark successfully?
Since the shot in the dark debuted in Survivor 41, it has been used 19 times, at least once in every new-era season except Survivor 49. But it has only come up “Safe” three times, and just two of those actually removed votes from the player who used it.
Survivor 45’s Kaleb Gebrewold was the first to pull it off at the Final 12. Jeff Probst announced Kaleb was safe, and the urn later revealed all 11 votes were written with Kaleb’s name — making him the first player in history to receive every vote cast at a Tribal Council without placing one himself.
Then in Survivor 48, Mary Zheng was declared safe in a four-person tribe, negating a 2-0 vote after she had no vote and Justin Pioppi had lost his on a journey.
How many players have been medically evacuated?
There have been 21 medical evacuations across 15 different seasons. Only one wasn’t for a player’s own medical emergency: Terry Dietz was removed in Survivor: Cambodia after doctors informed him his son needed an immediate heart transplant.
The single season with the most medevacs was Survivor: Kaoh Rong, which saw three castaways — Caleb Reynolds, Neal Gottlieb, and Joe Del Campo — evacuated at different points. Before that, Survivor: Micronesia, Survivor: Samoa, Survivor: One World, and Survivor: Caramoan each had two medical evacuations. Every other season only had one.
How much money has been presented to winners since 2000?
Across 50 seasons of Survivor, winners have taken home a combined $52 million. Almost every season has awarded $1 million, but the two milestone anniversary seasons — Survivor: Winners at War and Survivor 50 — each handed out $2 million to the winner.
On top of that, castaways at the live finale receive a $10,000 appearance fee. With 40 technical live finales, that brings the overall total to $52.4 million paid to 48 unique winners — though, of course, not remotely equally.
How many seasons have had a tiebreaker vote at Final Tribal Council?
Only once in Survivor history has Final Tribal Council ended in a deadlock between two players, forcing the third finalist to become the deciding jury member. In Survivor: Ghost Island, fans were stunned when Jeff Probst revealed he would read the votes at Final Tribal Council instead of waiting for the live reunion show.
The result was a 5-5-0 split between Wendell Holland and Domenick Abbate, which pushed Laurel Johnson into the final juror role and made her the one who ultimately cast the winning vote.
How many loved ones have appeared on the show for visits?
Over 35 seasons, the show has featured more than 250 in-person visits from players’ loved ones. Some visits happened during rewards, while others came as challenge prizes, where family members had to win time with their castaway. The most unforgettable moment came in Survivor: Winners at War, when 24 loved ones — the most in show history — arrived to spend the day with their players, no challenge required. Players on the Edge of Extinction also received visits from 15 loved ones.
How many fake immunity idols have been played?
The first fake immunity idol appeared in season 11, Survivor: Guatemala, and was created by Gary Hogeboom. Since then, there have been 38 instances of players using something in hopes of convincing others that they — or their target — held a real idol. But only 10 of those fake-out attempts were actually played at Tribal Council.
There was also one unaired twist of fate: because productions since season 33 have all filmed on the same Fiji beaches, Zeke Smith’s fake idol from Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X was never found until the following season, Survivor: Game Changers, when Ozzy Lusth stumbled onto it. Since Ozzy and Zeke were searching together, Zeke quickly admitted it was his fake from the previous season.
How many players have been voted out, but returned to the game in the same season?
Six seasons have included a twist that allowed eliminated players to battle their way back. From the Outcast twist in Survivor: Pearl Islands to Redemption Island and Edge of Extinction, 11 players have had their torches snuffed and still managed to return to the game. In addition, seasons 38 and 40 used Edge of Extinction to send multiple pre-merge boots to the jury.
