Boston Rob reveals the Survivor 50 twist that completely failed (and he’s not wrong)

Boston Rob says one Survivor 50 twist didn’t work — and honestly, he may have a point.

Boston Rob knows the ins and outs of Survivor better than most, but he’s now joining the growing crowd criticizing one Survivor 50 twist that simply didn’t land.

In a conversation with People ahead of the Survivor 50 finale, Boston Rob said he’s not impressed with the Billie Eilish Boomerang idol.

“Some of them didn’t really play out, like the Billie Eilish Idol,” Boston Rob told People. “Like, I love to hear that Billie Eilish is a fan of Survivor, but to not see it play out—or not yet anyway—I almost feel like maybe if it doesn’t play, then leave it on the cutting room floor, right?”

While not every Boston Rob Survivor opinion is easy to agree with, this one feels hard to argue against. The Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol is a clever idea, but it’s also far too restrictive. If producers really want chaos, players need room to actually use these advantages. Making someone hand the idol to another player and keep it secret clearly backfired. And once everyone understood how idols worked, the whole dynamic of the game shifted. No one used the advantage at a moment when it truly mattered.

And when you add in the fact that Genevieve Mushaluk found two idols and still couldn’t use them for herself at any point in the game, it’s hard not to see this as an advantage that fell flat far more than production likely expected.

In my view, the idea could easily be improved with just a little more complexity. One option would be forcing the recipient to play the idol at the next Tribal Council, either for themselves or someone else. Another would be making it so the idol must be played for someone else, not the person who received it. That would create a bigger strategic opening and encourage bolder gameplay instead of just hoarding the idol and waiting for the wrong moment to pass.

You could also attach an expiration date to the idol without telling the player exactly when it expires. Letting them know it will eventually bounce back to the sender would add pressure and make them act faster before it’s too late.

There are plenty of ways to sharpen the boomerang idol concept, so it will be interesting to see what the producers come up with for Survivor 51 and 52. Will it return in some form? That remains to be seen.

Boston Rob didn’t reject every advantage, though. He also said he loved the MrBeast coin flip.

“I loved the MrBeast one — taking the risk, taking the chance, flipping the coin, doubling the prize money — that was pretty epic.”

If the coin hadn’t landed the right way, though, it would have been a major letdown. It worked, sure, but it had the potential to be a huge flop, not unlike the boomerang idol.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Jeff Probst and the team still have more surprises in store for the Survivor 50 finale on Wednesday, May 20.
